Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Program

Division of Technical Studies

Program Mission: The mission of the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program is to provide specialized classroom instruction and practical shop experience to prepare individuals for employment as entry-level air conditioning and refrigeration technician.

Academic Dean: Dewayne Lambert, MA

Exit Points: Technical Competency Area (TCA), Certificate of Technical Studies (CTS), Technical Diploma (TD), and Associate of Applied Science (AAS in Technical Studies).

Program Length: 2 years.

Special Comments: All courses in the Technical Diploma/Certificate of Technical Studies/Technical Competency Area exit points must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher. Only one grade of “D” or higher is acceptable in the general education core.

Programmatic Grade Point Average: Program requirements must be completed with a programmatic grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Students who successfully complete the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program will be able to:

Evaluate refrigerant pressure and temperatures in an air conditioning system.

  • Use a schematic to troubleshoot an electrical system.
  • Measure the performance of a residential air conditioning system.
  • Troubleshoot a residential heating system.
  • Adjust a commercial air conditioning unit.

  • ACR News: Air Conditioning & Refrigeration News - Commercial & technical coverage of products, systems & equipment for air conditioning and refrigeration contractors/suppliers/installers.
  • Air Conditioning Heating & Refrigeration News - Articles, interviews, business profiles, new products, timely news of note and patent information for professionals in air conditioning, heating and refrigeration.
  • ASHRAE Transactions - A collection of all papers presented at an ASHRAE Winter or Annual Meeting. Includes symposium & technical session papers as well as discussion questions. Topics include indoor air quality, refrigeration, building controls, ventilation & more.
  • Heating & Air-Conditioning Servicer - This series explores promising career paths that do not require a four-year degree. Instead, these fast-growing positions require on-the-job training, certification through training programs, vocational college training, or two-year college degrees.
  • Heating/Piping/Air Conditioning Engineering - Serves the mechanical engineered systems market in the areas of building construction, renovation & retrofit.
  • HVAC&R Research - Insightful information by internationally known experts. Global topics include emission sources affecting indoor air quality, a thermodynamic approach to modeling refrigerant lubricating oil mixes, & energy conservation strategies.
